Do I need any equipment?
For matwork sessions, you’ll need:
A Pilates or yoga mat, or any comfortable flat surface.

For apparatus classes (if available in your home or studio), you’ll need:
Reformer

* *Each class description will list the specific equipment required. Many sessions offer bodyweight-only options or provide alternatives if you don’t have access to certain props.

What are the benefits of pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact practice that helps improve:
Core strength and stability
Posture and alignment
Flexibility and mobility
Balance and body awareness
Muscular strength and endurance
Breath control and mental focus
It’s also known to support injury prevention, functional movement, and long-term joint health. Whether you’re building strength, recovering, or simply moving to feel good, Pilates is a versatile method that meets you where you are.
Should i be strength training as well?
Yes — strength training can be a powerful complement to your Pilates practice. Pilates builds deep stabilising muscles, improves mobility, and enhances body awareness, while traditional strength training (using heavier resistance, such as weights) focuses on building muscle mass, increasing bone density, and improving overall strength capacity.
Incorporating both can:
Improve functional strength and endurance
Support better joint stability and mobility
Enhance injury prevention
Boost overall performance in daily life and other physical activities
Pilates often lays the perfect foundation for safe, effective strength training by improving your movement mechanics and alignment. If you're unsure where to start, consider alternating Pilates and strength days or integrating light resistance into your Pilates sessions.
Can i lose weight doing pilates?
Pilates can support weight loss, but it’s not a high-calorie-burning workout like cardio or heavy strength training. Instead, Pilates helps build lean muscle, improve posture, increase mobility, and create more efficient movement patterns — all of which can contribute to long-term body composition changes.
Consistent Pilates practice can:
Enhance muscle activation
Boost core strength
Improve body awareness and alignment
Increase overall activity levels
Support a more mindful, sustainable approach to movement
When combined with balanced nutrition, daily activity, and adequate rest, Pilates can be part of an effective weight management journey. Even more importantly, it helps you feel stronger, more connected to your body, and better in your own skin. Please take this advice as general in nature and seek your GP to discuss your weight loss goals.
Can i do pilates with an injury?
In most cases, yes — Pilates can be a supportive and effective way to rebuild strength, mobility, and stability after injury. However, it’s essential to consult your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program. Balance by Baylee offers options with modifications, but it’s important to listen to your body and work within your current abilities. If you need personalised guidance, reach out for 1:1 digital training or tailored recommendations.
How do I know which class to start with?
If you’re new to Pilates or this style of training, we recommend beginning with the “Introduction”, “Foundations”, and “Level 1” classes to build confidence and familiarity with key movements. For those with some experience, the class descriptions will guide you to the right session based on intensity, equipment, and focus areas.
